Murder On The Orient Express

2017

For Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder On The Orient Express, it was impossible to schedule the mega-star cast for location shoots in New Zealand. Because the cast could not fly to location, the Orient Express was transported to Longcross Film Studios in Greater London.

Problem

Green screen was unsuitable for shots featuring the cast inside the Orient Express, because the train set’s reflective surfaces were prone to green spill and posed a challenge for post-production. The visual effects department required footage to be sequenced, mapped and composited on-set to look and feel believable in-camera.

Solution

We supported Video Equipment Rentals in delivering a 360° enhanced environment, playing two 8K plates on two 90×40 foot LED walls outputting 24 frames per second. We engineered a solution enabling content to be re-composed without re-rendering, programming a system of perspective and spherical maps in Disguise Designer.

Delivery

Over the eight week shoot period we managed the virtual production delivery on-set. The majority of compositions captured in-camera provided the visual effects department with final-pixel shots, and only three minor fixes were required in post-production. A special thank you to our associates, Video Equipment Rentals, for entrusting us to deliver.
